First Look with Dad

There is one moment in a lot of weddings that I feel isn’t documented enough: the first look between a dad and his daughter. Fathers and daughters have that special bond that’s a wonder to witness. For fathers, seeing their little girl in a white dress for the first time brings immense pride and a hint of sadness as well.

Unlike the first look between bride and groom which needs to be planned (because traditionally, the two will only see each other at the ceremony), the dad and the daughter always have a moment to themselves just before they walk down the aisle. It’s always such an emotional and beautiful encounter that I think should be captured. So if you’re in the planning stages of your wedding, talk to your photographer about making time for this!

Over the years, I’ve done quite a lot of father-daughter first looks on weddings. Here are some of my favorites:

Tips for doing a first look with dad:

Keep an element of surprise.

Dads don’t like to cry. They will do their best to steel themselves or mask their happy tears before the first look. So when possible, make it a surprise. You can have your dad sit or wait in another room, walk up to them, and make them turn around.

Don’t hurry.

The first time your father sees you in a wedding dress is not just a great photo opportunity. It’s a moment that will become a cherished memory for both of you. So approach it as such. Don’t rush.

Send a note.

If your dad is reserved and you’re worried that he won’t show any emotions when he sees you for the first time, send him a sweet note just before going into the room. This may not guarantee tears but a note from their little girl can turn any toughie into a softie.
